The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recently announced that all ad-hoc staff employed for the 2023 general election will take an oath of neutrality before the polls. This was stated by INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja.The Chairman said that this is part of INEC’s efforts to ensure a free and fair election process. He added that the oath will be taken by all ad-hoc staff, including those who will be deployed for the conduct of elections. This is to ensure that they remain impartial and unbiased during the electoral process.Prof Mahmood Yakubu also stated that INEC has put in place measures to ensure that all ad-hoc staff are well trained and equipped with the necessary skills to carry out their duties effectively and efficiently. He said that these measures have been put in place to ensure that there is no room for manipulation or rigging of elections.The Chairman also noted that INEC has put in place a robust monitoring system which will enable it to monitor and track any irregularities or malpractices during the electoral process. He said that this would enable the Commission to take swift action against anyone found wanting or guilty of any form of electoral malpractice or misconduct.This move by INEC is commendable as it shows its commitment towards ensuring a free and fair electoral process for 2023 general election. It also serves as a reminder to all ad-hoc staff to remain neutral throughout their tenure with INEC and not be influenced by any external factors or individuals during their service period.It is hoped that this measure will help ensure credible elections come 2023 general election, thereby giving Nigerians the opportunity to freely exercise their right to vote without any fear or intimidation
