UNIOSUN HOST SUMMER CODE FOR KIDS

In an effort to cultivate a new generation of digitally savvy students armed with 21st-century skills essential for addressing contemporary challenges, Osun State University's Information Management and Technology Centre, in collaboration with Re: learn by CcHUB, orchestrated the "Summer of Code." This initiative aimed to construct a classroom of the future focused on technology for children aged 5-18 years old, incorporating a blend of research and learning projects.

The "Summer of Code" unfolded as a dynamic four-week program designed to introduce children to computer programming. Throughout the sessions, participants, aged 5-18, delved into the creation of games and animations using Scratch, the design of websites using HTML and CSS, and initiation into programming computer apps and electronics. Emphasis was placed not only on technical skills but also on the development of soft skills, particularly in presentation, communication, and project management.

Mr. Simeon Abolarinwa, from the Information Management and Technology Centre at UNIOSUN, elucidated that the primary objective of the Summer of Code camp was to equip children with knowledge and skills crucial to the 21st century. The program sought to foster a generation of digital makers by imparting computer programming skills, enabling kids to express their creativity while enhancing critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Mr. Abolarinwa noted the exciting progress made by the children during the program, highlighting their ability to independently develop various games from scratch.

Prof. Oguntola Jelil Alamu, Acting Vice-Chancellor of UNIOSUN, represented by Prof. Janet Olaitan, extended congratulations to the participating children and their parents. Stressing the potential of technology and education to address current challenges in the education sector, Prof. Olaitan commended the Summer of Code program for exposing kids to technology. She anticipated that this exposure would contribute to the creation of innovative products that could revolutionize the education sector. The program concluded with the children showcasing the various projects they had worked on to their parents and invited guests, marking the culmination of a successful and enriching Summer of Code experience.
